MetricRaven vs Matomo: Matomo alternative
Matomo facts last checked · sources
Matomo is the most complete open-source alternative to Google Analytics. You can download it for free and run it on your own servers, or pay for Matomo Cloud, hosted in Frankfurt. It covers ecommerce, funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics, a tag manager and much more.
MetricRaven does less, on purpose. It is a hosted dashboard built around one question: which channels bring paying customers? Instead of asking you to add ecommerce tracking code, it connects to Stripe, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle and other providers and credits each payment to the visit that first brought the customer.

Pricing compared
Matomo Cloud is priced by hits, which include pageviews, events, downloads, outlinks and site searches. The Business plan is €22 ($26) a month for 50,000 hits and €38 ($42) for 100,000, before tax, with two months free on yearly billing. It includes 30 websites, 30 users and 24 months of raw data. On Cloud, AI assistant tracking requests also count as hits.
Matomo On-Premise is free with unlimited users and hits; you pay for the server and upkeep. Premium plugin bundles start with Team at 275 € a month, or 2 750 € a year, which adds funnels, heatmaps, session recordings and more.
MetricRaven counts events (pageviews, goals and payments): Starter is $9 a month for 10k and $19 for 100k, Growth $19 and $39. Bot and AI crawler requests have their own allowance and never use your events (pricing).
Choose MetricRaven if
- You want revenue by channel, referrer and campaign from your real payment data (attribute Stripe revenue).
- You don't want to run servers, apply updates or pay for plugin bundles.
- You want a small site to start at $9 a month instead of a 50k-hit plan.
- You want to see training crawlers such as GPTBot, which Matomo leaves out of its AI reports (AI crawlers).
Choose Matomo if
- You need open-source software you can host anywhere, including an intranet.
- You want heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics or A/B testing in the same tool.
- You need detailed visitor profiles, custom reports and custom dimensions.
- Your data must stay in the EU on Matomo Cloud, or on your own servers.
What Matomo does well
- Data ownership. Matomo core is GPLv3. Self-host it for free, or use Cloud and move your data between the two.
- Breadth. Ecommerce, goals, funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics, media analytics, A/B testing, a tag manager and roll-up reporting.
- Migration from GA. A Google Analytics data importer and no data sampling.
- AI traffic. An AI Assistants channel for visits from ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, plus AI agent and AI chatbot reports through server-side integrations.
- SEO and AI tools: Search Console keywords for Google and Bing, and an official MCP server.
What MetricRaven does well
- Payments connected, not coded. Read-only connections to Stripe, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle, Polar, Shopify and others, with refunds and subscriptions.
- Revenue on every report. Channels, referrers, campaigns, pages and countries sort by revenue, and Search Console keywords show estimated revenue.
- Every crawler, not only assistants. A server-side package reports GPTBot, ClaudeBot and ChatGPT-User requests by page, including robots.txt and llms.txt.
- One page to read, plus an MCP server, a CLI and GitHub commits on the chart.
How to try MetricRaven next to Matomo
- Start a 14-day trial; no card is needed.
- Add the MetricRaven script next to your Matomo tag (install).
- Connect your payment provider, for example Stripe, and import your payment history.
- Pass the visitor ID into your checkout so new payments are attributed (Stripe Checkout).
- After two weeks, compare visitor counts and check which channels bring revenue. Keep Matomo if you rely on heatmaps or recordings.

Verdict
Matomo is the stronger choice if you want a full analytics suite you control: self-hosting, heatmaps, session recordings, visitor profiles and years of open-source development. Few tools match its breadth.
If you mainly want to know which channels bring paying customers, MetricRaven gets you there with less work: connect your payment provider and revenue appears next to every source, without ecommerce code or plugins. Many teams can run both and compare after a few weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is MetricRaven cheaper than Matomo?
For small sites, usually. MetricRaven starts at $9 a month for 10k events, while Matomo Cloud starts at 22 euros (26 dollars) a month for 50,000 hits. Self-hosted Matomo is free, but you pay for the server and maintenance, and premium plugin bundles cost extra.
Can MetricRaven import my Matomo data?
No, there is no Matomo import today. Payment history can be imported from your payment provider, and visits are counted from the day you install the MetricRaven script.
Can I self-host MetricRaven like Matomo?
No. MetricRaven is a hosted service only. If self-hosting is a requirement, Matomo On-Premise is a good fit, and you can still use MetricRaven alongside it for revenue attribution.
