Track revenue per visitor

Know what one more visitor is worth to you.

Updated · 1 min read

Revenue per visitor is total revenue divided by visitors. It folds conversion rate and order size into one number, so you can compare a week of launch traffic with a quiet month, or a social post with a search ranking, on the same scale.

Why this matters

It answers a practical question: what can you afford to spend to get one more visitor? If a visitor from search is worth $2 and a sponsored post costs $1 per click, you know the math works. If revenue per visitor falls while traffic rises, you are attracting the wrong people.

Why most analytics tools can't tell you

Visitor counts live in your analytics tool and revenue lives in Stripe or another provider. Dividing one by the other in a spreadsheet gives you a site-wide average at best, never the figure for a single channel or page.

How MetricRaven does it

MetricRaven shows Revenue/visitor in the Traffic overview for any period and filter. Because payments are attributed to visits, a filter such as Channel is Social or Country is US recalculates it for just those visitors. You can also chart it day by day to see the trend.

How to do it

  1. Connect your payment provider (Stripe, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy and others).
  2. Open Traffic and read Revenue/visitor in the overview for the period you care about.
  3. Click the figure to chart it over time (reading the traffic chart).
  4. Click a channel, referrer or country in a breakdown to filter, and compare its revenue per visitor with the site average.
  5. Save the filters you check often as a segment.

Small groups swing a lot: a channel with ten visitors and one big sale will look amazing for a week. Compare groups with enough visitors, or use a longer period.
